MSD

Street Performance: The MSD 6A is the base model of the
capacitive discharge multiple spark 6 Series design. Whether you have a powerful street
machine, hard working truck or trick street rod, the powerful multiple sparks of the MSD
6A will ensure complete combustion. Benefits such as quicker ET?s, easier starting,
reduced plug fouling, more power and even increased fuel economy can be expected with the
6A?s high energy multiple sparks. Like all of the MSD 6 Series Ignitions, the 6A will work
with virtually any vehicle as long as it has a 12-18 volt electrical system. It can be
triggered using breaker points, a magnetic pickup or the output of an electronic
amplifier. All necessary parts and wiring instructions are included.

 Circle
Track Racing:
Ignitions for harsh racing applications such as stock cars, late models, modifieds, road
racing, desert and off-road.
The 6T is designed for severe duty applications such as off-road and circle track racing.
The circuits receive extra vibration protection in the form of additional internal bracing
and a heavy duty coating of Humi-Seal. This coating protects the circuitry from harsh
vibrations and moisture, plus rubber vibration mounts are included. A special 4-wire
connector will plug directly into an MSD Soft Touch Rev Control (PN 8738 or Engine Control
(PN 8968).

Street Performance:
The 6AL shares the same proven circuitry of the 6A with the addition of a built-in
adjustable rev limiter. The combination of powerful sparks with the safety of a Soft Touch
Rev Control is what makes the 6AL the most popular ignition control in the world.
MSD first developed the Soft Touch rev control to prevent overrev damage to your motor in
the event of a missed shift or driveline failure. The rpm limit is adjustable in 100 rpm
increments with MSD?s plug-in modules. When the engine reaches your selected limit, the
Soft Touch circuitry begins dropping the spark to various cylinders. On the next cycle,
these plugs are fired again to prevent fuel from loading up in the cylinder. The result is
a smooth and accurate limiting action without backfires or roughness.
The Soft Touch Rev Control also opens the door for you to add rpm accessories such as a
Two Step Rev Control. A Two Step allows you to set two rpm limits, one for a holeshot rpm
and another for overrev protection. The 6AL is supplied with rubber shock mounts and
modules for 3,000, 6,000, 7,000 and 8,000 rpm.

Street Performance:
The 6 BTM is ideal for engines with a turbo or supercharger. Not only will the engine
benefit from MSD?s full power CD sparks, but there is also an adjustable boost/timing
retard circuit to prevent detonation.
When your supercharger (turbo or blower) forces the air/fuel ratio into the engine, the
cylinder pressure inside the combustion chamber increases. The result is a great amount of
power but this can also lead to detonation which can result in severe engine damage. The 6
BTM lets you dial away detonation by retarding the timing in relation to the boost
pressure. By electronically controlling the ignition timing your engine can run on the
threshold of detonation to obtain maximum power and efficiency.
The BTM features a dash mounted control knob that lets you adjust the amount of timing
retard. It can be adjusted from 0? per pound of boost to 3? per pound. The boost pressure
is monitored by a sensor built into the MSD.
The 6 BTM also shares the Soft Touch Rev Control of the 6AL Ignition for overrev
protection. The BTM is supplied with rubber shock mounts and rpm modules for 3,000, 6,000,
7,000 and 8,000 rpm.
NOTE: Not compatible with distributorless systems.
NOTE: With an MSD 6 Ignition, some factory and aftermarket tachometers and fuel injection
systems may require an MSD Tach/EFI Adapter.

Distributorless Ignitions:
For Late model engines with distributorless ignition systems (DIS), we offer a variety of
DIS Ignition's from street to racing units.
Late model engines with distributorless ignition systems (DIS) can take advantage of MSD
performance with the new Digital DIS-2 and DIS-4 Ignition Controls. These capacitive
discharge Ignitions feature multi-channel capability complemented with multiple sparks,
rev limiters and a timing control.
The new DIS Ignitions are engineered with the latest in digital science including power
MOSFET technology and efficient IGBT coil drivers. The features of the ignitions are
managed by a 15 MHz microcontroller for extremely fast compensations and decisions. In the
end this creates incredibly accurate spark delivery, rev limit and timing functions.
The multi-channel design of the MSD DIS Ignitions saturate each coil pack with 470 volts
and up to 115 millijoules of spark energy. This creates more efficient combustion in the
cylinders to produce more power. Throttle response and mid range pull are also improved
due to a series of powerful multiple sparks that last for 20? of crankshaft rotation.
To complete the package MSD engineers built several great programmable features into the
DIS ignitions to give you better performance on the track. There is a Two Step Rev Control
which gives you one limit to set for holeshots and another for top end performance. For
engines using nitrous or extremely high cylinder pressures you can also program a High
Speed Retard after the engine hits total timing. Both of these features are easy to adjust
with built-in dip switches. With proven MSD Ignition technology and years of performance
ignition experience, an MSD DIS will make a great addition to your car!

Programmable Distributorless Ignitions:
For Late model engines with distributorless ignition systems (DIS), we offer a variety of
DIS Ignition's from street to racing units.
Four cylinder distributorless ignition applications (with two coil packs) will benefit
from the incredible spark energy of the the new MSD Programmable DIS-2 Ignition Control as
well as its ignition programming capabilities! MSD"s CD circuits work with
state-of-the-art IGBT coil drivers to deliver a spark with 190 mj of spark energy! Below
3,300 rpm, there is series of multiple sparks that burns in the cylinder for 20? producing
a smooth idle with great throttle response. You get to control all of this spark energy
through an incredible array of timing and rpm programs. The heart of the Programmable
DIS-2 is a 15Mh microprocessor that reviews, analyzes and manages every trigger signal and
is capable of up to 15 million instructions per second! The end result is a powerful
ignition control with endless programming capabilities to produce reliable performance.
The Pro-Data+ software can be used with any PC running Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, or XP. It
is available on a 3.5 floppy or can be downloaded through the MSD Ignition website.

Drag Racing:
For engines that require incredible spark power to ignite exotic fuel combinations under
high compression circumstances. Pro modifieds, pro stock, monster trucks, and pulling
tractors will find their ignitions here.
The 7AL-2 is the choice of professional racers from six second Pro Stocks to Monster
trucks. The CD circuits deliver full energy sparks to the plug throughout 14,000 rpm
ensuring that even the most exotic fuel combinations are thoroughly ignited. A special
coil coupler increases spark duration and protects the Ignition in the event of coil
failure. MSD's accurate Soft Touch Rev Control is built into the 7AL-2 so our Module
Selectors and other rpm controls can easily be connected.
To survive the demands of heavy duty racing applications, the circuit boards receive a
heavy duty coating of Humi-Seal compound. This substance seals the circuits for resistance
to vibration and moisture. Heavy duty vibration mounts are also supplied. The 7AL-2 is a
proven winner on tracks around the world.

Circle Track Racing:
Ignitions for harsh racing applications such as stock cars, late models, modifieds, road
racing, desert and off-road.
This new ignition is designed for professional racing applications that run for long
periods of time at high rpm. Extremely high end power components have been added and coil
protection diodes are included for maximum reliability. With the new high end power
components, the power output is increased with less heat generated. The new design also
produces a longer spark duration with higher current.
The MSD 6 HVC Ignition is designed to be used with the new HVC Coil, PN 8250. The new
E-Core design produces much higher current levels with no loss of output voltage. Special
windings create an inductance that is matched to the MSD 6 HVC Ignition. Large amounts of
copper are used in the windings that increases the current and also drastically reduces
the operating temperature of the coil. More power and less heat!
The MSD 6 HVC Ignition comes ready to race in NASCAR competition. It includes the 6-pin
mandated Weatherpak connector, clear silicone potting and a clear base plate for easy
review by the tech inspectors. An MSD Soft Touch Rev Control, PN 8738 can also be
plugged-in for over-rev protection.
MSD HVC Coil, PN 8250, must be used with the PN 6600 Ignition Control.

Drag Racing:
For engines that require incredible spark power to ignite exotic fuel combinations under
high compression circumstances. Pro modifieds, pro stock, monster trucks, and pulling
tractors will find their ignitions here.
The most complete drag racing ignition available! The 7AL-3 is based off the well proven
7AL-2. It features the same capacitive discharge multiple sparks plus offers 20% more
primary voltage and an additional 35% more spark energy. Not only is the 7AL-3 packed with
more power but it also features a host of drag racing accessories. A built-in Three Step
Rev Control provides three different rpm limits that can be used for the burnout, holeshot
and top end. The rpm limits are adjustable with easy to access plug-in modules and will
deliver consistent performance on each run.
A Multi-Step Retard features four different modules that can be activated as well as a RPM
activated switch that can activate components such as a micro-switch on the shifter or a
nitrous solenoid.
Many race engines with crank trigger systems or locked out distributors will benefit from
the 7AL-3's built-in start retard option. During cranking the start retard will retard the
timing 25? allowing the engine to turn over easier. When the engine starts, the timing
will go back to it's mechanical setting. One last option is an rpm activated switch. This
feature allows you to activate a solenoid or shift light at an adjustable rpm. When the
engine hits the desired rpm, the component is activated and whenever the rpm falls below
that amount it is deactivated. The increased output and built-in racing features make the
MSD 7AL-3 the best and most complete high performance drag racing ignition available.

MSD Blaster Coil
If you are looking to upgrade your stock coil, or want to compliment the performance of
your MSD Blaster Ignition, MSD 5, 6 or 7, the Blaster Coil line is the right choice. All
of the Blaster Coils are designed for improved spark output!
Special 100:1 windings are used to provide maximum build-up of voltage! These windings are
held secure and kept cool in an oil filled metal canister. The tower assembly is molded of
durable alkyd material due to its high dielectric characteristics while wide spaced brass
primary terminals prevent the possibility of spark.
There are several versions of the Blaster Coil available. All of them have the same
internal specifications, but have different housings or components. Each Blaster Coil can
be used with a stock ignition, Blaster Ignition, MSD 5, 6 or 7 Ignition Control. Most late
model vehicles with electronic ignitions do not require a ballast resistor, check your
ignition and manufacturers specifications to determine if a ballast is required in your
application.
Stock Applications
The following Blaster 2 Coils are supplied with a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor and a terminal
and boot to fit most applications. The ballast resistor must be used with stock Points
Ignition and Mallory Unilite applications.
NOTE: These are the same coils as the other Blaster Coils, except they are supplied with a
ballast resistor.

MSD Ignition and Late Model Applications
The following Blaster Coils can be used in stock applications, but do not include a
ballast resistor. When you are using an MSD Ignition Control, the Ignition is responsible
for delivering the voltage to the coil so a ballast is not necessary.
The Blaster 3 Coil features an extra tall tower design to improve the coil wire attachment
and spark isolation.
Blaster 2F coil features the same "horseshoe" connector that the stock Ford
Duraspark Ignition used to have. With this coil, there is no need to cut the wires!
CARB Approved, D-40-15

Blaster High Vibration Coil
For circle track, off road and other severe duty racing applications, this is the coil!
The windings of the High Vibration Coil are completely encased in a premium epoxy making
it impossible for vibration to affect the windings. This assembly is housed in a unique
alkyd molded shell which provides high dielectric characteristics plus a very durable
shell. Brass primary terminals ensure full voltage delivery and are spaced far apart to
eliminate the chance of spark arc-over. The High Vibration Coil can be mounted in any
position and can be used with a standard canister coil mount.
CARB Approved, D-40-15

Blaster GM Coil
If your GM Coil has two connectors, usually one gray and one black, this is a direct
replacement performance coil. This style coil was used on pretty much anything that came
out of GM until 1996 (except DIS systems).
MSD's Blaster GM Coil features a red housing that surrounds a set of Blaster 2 influenced
windings for improved output. The Coil mounts in the same location as the stock coil and
plugs right in.
CARB Approved D-40-34, OBD II Legal
Installation Tip:
If you plan to install an MSD Ignition with your Blaster GM Coil, use a PN 8876 Harness
for a direct plug-in installation.

Blaster DIS Racing Coil
For all-out race cars with multi-channel coil drivers this new Blaster Coil will provide
the incredible voltage your vehicle needs. This coil will top off your MSD DIS-4 HO
Ignition system with its low resistance and quick rise time. This combination can produce
a spark with incredible voltage that?s capable of burning the fuel mix in any cylinder!
The Blaster DIS Racing Coil can be used on a variety of applications ranging from coil per
cylinder systems to waste spark combinations. The windings are secured in the epoxy molded
housing for vibration protection and high dielectric properties and is easy to mount.

Blaster TFI Coil
Top off your Ford's Ignition system with this great new replacement coil. The Blaster TFI
is MSD performance in factory Ford clothing! The windings and construction of this new
coil are similar in performance to the line of MSD Blaster 2 Coils. The coil has an
increased turns ratio plus there is lower primary resistance than the stock coil. This all
amounts to a bolt-in replacement coil that produces more output voltage. The Blaster TFI
will work with stock ignition systems as well as MSD equipped cars and trucks.
CARB Approved, D-40-34, OBD II Legal
Installation Tip:
If you plan to install an MSD Ignition with your Blaster TFI Coil, use a PN 8874 Harness
for a direct plug-in installation.

Blaster SS Coil
The MSD line of Blaster Coils is known for great performance from the street to the circle
tracks. Following in that performance line, the new Blaster SS Coil is ready to leave its
mark.
The Blaster SS is an E-core style coil, which is a very efficient design when it comes to
producing high voltage and spark energy. The windings produce 300mA and can handle up to
48,000 volts when used with an MSD 6 Series Ignition Control. The windings are held secure
in a Dupont? Rynite? injection molded shell and are then encased in an epoxy compound for
protection against vibration and water. The primary terminals are located at opposite ends
of the tall spark tower so there is no chance of arcing especially with the high
dielectric characteristics of the Rynite housing.
The Coil is compact enough to fit in tight areas and is supplied with vibrations mounts.
CARB Approval Pending

MSD HEI Coil
Replace the stock internal coil of your HEI with an MSD. The coil features lower
inductance and high temperature windings which allow the coil to charge faster delivering
increased spark energy at higher rpm. The MSD Coil mounts in the stock HEI cap and
installs in minutes. To receive the most from the coil, it is recommended to replace the
module with MSD's powerful HEI Module, PN 8364.
CARB Approved, D-40-15

MSD Pro Power Coil
The Pro Power Coil is the best choice for short duration applications such as drag racing
or tractor pulls. The special windings of the Pro Power Coil are designed to produce the
most spark when used with an MSD 7, 8 or 10 Ignition Control. With only 0.03 ohms
resistance the coil is capable of producing up to 55,000 volts! The housing is molded from
Rynite material and is supplied with vibration mounts for a secure installation. A premium
grade oil keeps the windings of the coil cool and brass terminals ensures that the full
voltage reaches the windings.
NOTE: The Pro Power Coil is designed for short duration applications only. Not for use
with any stock ignition or MSD 5 or 6 Series Ignitions.

Flying Magnet Crank Trigger Kits
For a long time, racers have known that one of the best things to do to an engine to
improve its performance is to stabilize the ignition timing. The MSD Flying Magnet Crank
Trigger system does exactly that by using four magnets embedded in an aluminum wheel.
Although similar in appearance to other crank triggers, the MSD Flying Magnet design works
on a different principle.
Most crank triggers have a wheel, with steel studs sticking out, bolted to the harmonic
balancer. As the crankshaft turns the studs pass by a stationary magnetic pickup,
triggering the ignition. This pickup can be triggered by other bolts, debris or even
vibrations which will cause a loss of power or engine damage. The MSD Flying Magnet Crank
Trigger uses four magnets secured in the aluminum trigger wheel that pass by a stationary
non-magnetic pickup to trigger the ignition. This "flying magnet" design
produces accurate trigger signals and the non-magnetic pickup cannot be false triggered.
Each Flying Magnet Crank Trigger includes a two-piece mounting bracket for the
non-magnetic pickup that in most cases will work on either the passenger side or driver's
side of the engine (the SB Chrysler and SB Ford brackets mount on only one side). The
CNC-machined aluminum bracket securely holds the pickup in place and is slotted to provide
a wide range of timing adjustment. Spacers are included so you can mount the bracket on
engines with standard motor mounts or engines with a ?" motor plate. These systems
will trigger MSD 6, 7, 8 and 10 Series Ignitions and all MSD Timing Accessories.
Flying Magnet Design Prevents False Triggers
The Flying Magnet Crank Trigger is named for the four magnets that are embedded in the
aluminum wheel. As the engine is rotating, these magnets move past the stationary
non-magnetic pickup, creating the trigger signal for the ignition. This design eliminates
false triggering because only the moving magnets can trigger the pickup and ignition
control.
Not legal for use on pollution controlled vehicles.
